 SDOH can hurt you

Social determinants of health (SDOH) refer to the various social and economic factors that impact an individual’s physical and mental well-being. These factors include things like income, education, housing, and access to healthcare.

Research has shown that SDOH has a significant impact on overall health outcomes. Individuals from lower socioeconomic backgrounds are more likely to suffer from chronic health conditions and have shorter lifespans. They also have less access to preventative care and are more likely to seek care in emergency settings.

Poverty is one of the most significant social determinants of health. People living in poverty are more likely to suffer from poor health outcomes due to a lack of access to healthy food, safe housing, and quality healthcare. Additionally, they may be more susceptible to stress and mental health issues due to financial insecurity and discrimination.

Education is also a key social determinant of health. Individuals with higher levels of education tend to have better health outcomes, as they are more likely to be aware of health risks and know how to access preventive and medical care.

Housing is another important social determinant of health. Adequate housing is essential for physical and mental well-being, and individuals living in overcrowded or substandard housing are more likely to suffer from poor health outcomes.

Access to healthcare is also a key social determinant of health. Individuals with limited access to healthcare are more likely to delay seeking care and may have worse health outcomes as a result. This is particularly true for individuals from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, who may not have the resources to access quality care.

Addressing social determinants of health is crucial for improving overall health outcomes. This can be done by implementing policies that target poverty reduction, increasing access to education and job training, and improving access to affordable housing and healthcare.

As a whole, social determinants of health such as poverty, education, housing, and healthcare access profoundly affect a person’s wellbeing. Addressing these factors is crucial for improving overall health outcomes and reducing health disparities.
