The (Not So) Glamorous Life of Founders
During my life, I have often received feedback from those around me, such as family members and friends, telling me how jealous they are of what I do – being an entrepreneur, living a well-ordered life. I’ve had the opportunity to be a part of several high-tech startups and have seen firsthand the excitement and thrill of a successful exit. However, there is also a less glamorous side to these exits that is not often talked about.
First of all, the road to a successful exit is long and arduous. It requires years of hard work, dedication and sacrifice. The hours are long, the stress is high, and the pressure to deliver results is intense. Many startups fail before they even have the chance to exit, and those that do make it to the finish line often do so at great personal cost.Even when a startup does exit successfully, the aftermath can be bittersweet. For the founders and early employees, the exit often marks the end of a chapter in their lives. The company that they poured their hearts and souls into is no longer theirs, and they must move on to the next thing. This can be a difficult and emotional process, and it’s not uncommon for people to experience feelings of loss and grief.
Additionally, there is also the financial aspect of an exit to consider. While the founders and early employees may receive a significant payout, the reality is that the vast majority of the proceeds go to venture capitalists and other investors. This can be a difficult pill to swallow for those who have been working tirelessly to build the company from the ground up.
Furthermore, many startup employees are not aware of the tax implications of a high-tech exit. The tax rate for selling a business is much higher than for selling an asset and many employees are not prepared for the financial hit.
Finally, there is also the question of what comes next. For many people, a successful exit marks the end of a journey, but it can also be the beginning of a new one. Many entrepreneurs and startup employees find themselves at a loss when it comes to what to do next. They have spent so much time and energy building one company that they are not sure what to do with themselves once it’s over.In conclusion, while a successful exit can be a thrilling and rewarding experience, it’s important to keep in mind that there is also a less glamorous side to these events. The road to an exit is long and difficult, and the aftermath can be emotional and challenging. As we continue to strive for success in the high-tech industry, it’s important to be aware of the less glamorous side of exits and to be prepared for the challenges that come with them.
